Birds of Paradise

2015

As we know, music is easy (and sounds at well) if you have the talent for it and rather impossible if you haven’t. This cd is a good example of my purposes.Beautiful compositions, a marvelous group sound, interesting solos, an amazing balance between brain and heart! This birds of paradise are touched by the grace.
Gustavo Beytelmann, pianist & composer

Hans Jansen, Johnny’s Garden

Review Traveller – Joan Sommers

Rik Cornelissen was a name unknown to me until I got this outstanding new CD from him. Now I can tell you that he is a wonderful, exciting, intense, creative musician. If you like the music of an accordionist who really listens to the sounds he is producing and treats the reeds at both ends of the dynamic spectrum with care, then you, too, will enjoy the music and appreciate the artistry exhibited by Rik Cornelissen.

His liner notes are quite interesting and I find it somewhat unique that he writes truthfully that he is proud of the journey he has been taking during the past several years. He should indeed be proud! He has studied with several outstanding teachers, he has traveled in countries other than his own, he has examined the scores and recordings of some well-known artists in the jazz field and, through all this journey, he has discovered how to present his own exquisite arrangements and transcriptions. His own improvisations are interesting and they truly fit and, indeed, enhance the lines of the original tunes.

You will find Rik has more than enough technique in both hands to show the accordion off to great advantage. In his case, he uses a Pigini Bayan model extremely well, with beautiful musical sounds from every reed regardless of tempi, dynamics, or range. He is a musician who listens! In his notes he uses the term “Such power in such simplicity.” And that is how I might describe every piece on this TRAVELER CD. Simplicity abounds throughout and it is powerful.

Rik Cornelissen, now a teacher of Jazz & Pop at the Artez Conservatory in Arnhem, The Netherlands since 2013, is also active in many different formations. He is plays with top-notch groups performing several different styles, as well as with The Dutch Opera, Opera Minora, Tango Extremo, and Claudio Jacomucci. His classical studies along with jazz and commercial music and, yes, his musical experiences during his foreign travels have all served him well.

You will enjoy listening to this recording. Included are 11 very fine pieces, of which a few will be familiar to you, but every one of them wonderful compositions to which Rik has contributed his own special touch. Sit down, have a nice drink, and celebrate how beautiful the accordion can be when played by a fine musician such as Rik Cornelissen. I hope he stays busy for a very long time playing the accordion.

Included selections are:
1. Levitando by Ramón Valle; 2. Angustia Del Alma by Wim Warman; 3. Lament by J.J. Johnson; 4. Lôro by Egberto Gismonti; 5. Remembrance by Michel Camilo; 6. Sete Anéis by Egberto Gismonti; 7. Leaving by Bert Van Den Brink; 8. Falling Grace. by Steve Swallow; 9. You Must Believe in Spring by Michel Legrand; 10. Armando’s Rhumba by Chick Corea; 11. Il Postino by Luis Bacalov.
